A Piano alternative for magazine publishers
This guide is about Piano (piano.io), the subscription, paywall and analytics software for publishers, not the musical instrument. If you are looking at Piano, you are weighing an enterprise digital-revenue platform. That suits some publishers well. The useful question is what your magazine business needs to run: advanced paywall rules and reader data at scale, or one system where print and digital subscriptions, ad sales, the flatplan and billing share the same customer record. RunMags is an option to evaluate when the answer is the second one.
RunMags connects your magazine business from proposal to paid invoice, with Maggie built in. Plans scale by legal entities and brands. Explore the publishing software comparison hub.
What Piano says about its product
As of 2026-10-04, Piano Subscriptions (the product Piano previously called Piano Activation) combines Composer, a rules engine for paywalls and offers, with identity management, journey orchestration and billing through a native Stripe Billing integration. Sources: official Piano Subscriptions page and official Piano rename notice, retrieved 2026-10-04. Piano's billing page describes automated billing cycles with failed-payment retries, trials, promo codes, upgrade paths, churn-prevention and save campaigns, and AI propensity targeting for offers. For print, Piano describes print, digital and ePaper subscriptions in one catalogue with bundles, subscriber self-service for delivery address, payment method and newsletter preferences, and print logistics through fulfilment partners. Its media page presents four product lines (Analytics, Subscriptions, Audience and Amplifier) and invites publishers to request a demo. Source: official Piano media page, retrieved 2026-10-04.

Where RunMags works differently
RunMags puts subscriptions, advertising sales, contracts, the flatplan and advertiser invoicing in one system, on the same customer record. Print and digital subscriptions can run on issue-based or time-based terms, with renewals, back issues, gifts and credit notes, and each issue's distribution list goes to your printer or mail house. Advertiser invoices sync to Fortnox, QuickBooks Online or Xero per legal entity, with EU VAT; subscription invoices stay in RunMags. Plans and prices are published, and you can start a trial yourself. Maggie, your publishing sidekick, is built in: she can help with product questions and route a request to the team.
The Piano pages we checked, including its media page, as of 2026-10-04, do not describe ad orders, advertiser invoicing or flatplanning. Absence from a cited page is not proof that something is missing, so ask Piano directly if you need them.
When Piano may be the better fit
If you are a large digital publisher that needs advanced paywall rules, propensity-based offers or identity at scale, Piano may be the better fit. The same applies if you sell site licences to companies, universities or libraries, or need behavioural analytics from the same vendor. RunMags has not verified a paywall for production use, does not yet schedule automatic renewals or retry failed card payments, and its subscriber portal does not yet let subscribers update cards, download invoices or cancel. This guide makes no claim about Piano's reviews, cost or quality.
Test one subscriber who is also an advertiser
Pick a real organisation that holds a print subscription and also books ads in two issues. Ask each vendor to show the same sequence: the subscription order and renewal, the next issue's distribution list, the signed ad order, its place on the flatplan and the advertiser invoice. Then move one placement to a later issue and watch which records change. Let someone from circulation and someone from finance review the result, not only the sales team.
Plan a bounded switch
Start with an export of subscribers, payers and gift recipients, with issues remaining or end dates, plus advertiser organisations and contacts if they are in scope. Agree field mapping and duplicate handling, and import a small sample before the full list. Saved payment cards, paywall rules and payment history need a separate decision with the RunMags team and your payment provider. Compare current RunMags plans using your legal entities and brands.
Frequently asked questions
Is RunMags an alternative to Piano?
It can be, for magazine publishers that sell advertising as well as subscriptions. As of 2026-10-04, Piano describes Piano Subscriptions with Composer paywall and offer rules, identity management and Stripe-based billing. RunMags puts print and digital subscriptions, ad sales, contracts, the flatplan and advertiser invoicing in one system. Large digital publishers that need advanced paywall rules, propensity offers or identity at scale may be better served by Piano.
Does Piano publish its prices?
Not on its own website. As of 2026-10-04, piano.io/pricing returns a not-found page and Piano invites publishers to request a demo; pricing is quote only. RunMags plans scale by legal entities and brands; current prices are on the RunMags pricing page.
Does RunMags have a paywall or automatic renewals like Piano?
Not today. RunMags has not verified a paywall for production use, and renewals are charged when your staff run the renewal batch; automatic scheduled renewals and failed-payment retries are not available yet. If you need them now, keep Piano or another tool for that part of your business.
Can I move my subscribers from Piano to RunMags?
Subscriber and subscription imports are part of RunMags onboarding; import a small sample first. Card-token continuity is not documented, so plan with the RunMags team and your payment provider how saved payment methods will move before you switch.
