RunMags vs Pelcro: a fair comparison for magazine publishers

Updated . Written by RunMags, so read it as one vendor's comparison: every Pelcro statement links to Pelcro's own public page and the date we read it. All of those pages were re-read over HTTP on .

Pelcro is a subscription and paywall specialist: its own comparison page says “Pelcro is built around reader revenue”. RunMags runs advertising sales, the flatplan, subscriptions, circulation and billing on one customer record. They overlap on print and digital subscriptions and part with each other on almost everything around them. This page sets out what Pelcro says publicly, where it is the stronger choice today, where RunMags is different, and which team each one suits. It does not score either product.

How this comparison was made

Pelcro statements come from its own pages, each retrieved : the Pelcro homepage, the Pelcro magazine subscription page, the Pelcro paywalls page, the Pelcro client portal page, the Pelcro fulfilment page, the Pelcro pricing page, the Pelcro AI Billing page, the Pelcro AI Harness page, the Pelcro AI Customer Service page, the Pelcro magazine CRM article, and its developer documentation (Pelcro migration guide and Pelcro subscription webhooks documentation). We also read Pelcro's own comparison page, the Pelcro vs Magazine Manager page (shown on the page as last updated October 13, 2026). They are the vendor's own descriptions, not tested results, and we did not use a Pelcro account.

Pelcro's comparison index, retrieved , lists no RunMags comparison, so nothing on this page is Pelcro's view of RunMags. Its comparison with Magazine Manager grades Pelcro as full support in all eight capability categories it compares; treat that as the vendor's own assessment. That is why our table also lists what RunMags does not do. Where a Pelcro cell says “not documented”, the pages we read do not mention it, which is not the same as not having it. RunMags statements come from live runmags.com pages and our own capability review in October 2026.

Where Pelcro is stronger today

Several things Pelcro documents are not in RunMags yet. If they matter to your team, weigh them first.

  • Paywalls. Pelcro documents metered, freemium and hard paywalls with localised offers. RunMags has not verified a paywall for production use.
  • Automatic renewals and payment retries. Pelcro describes renewals that run on their own with smart retries on failed charges. RunMags charges renewals when staff run the batch and does not retry failed card payments.
  • Subscriber self-service. Pelcro's client portal covers payment methods, invoices and plan changes. RunMags readers can update details and newsletter choices, not cards, invoices or cancellation.
  • Single-copy and dealer fulfilment, and USPS tools. Pelcro documents single-copy fulfilment with dealer draws and returns, and USPS address verification. RunMags builds per-issue subscriber distribution lists.
  • Developer integration. Pelcro publishes subscription webhooks and documentation for websites and apps. RunMags pages do not describe an equivalent for reader access, so ask the team.
  • Billing depth. Pelcro's menu lists accounts receivable, accounts payable, deferred revenue recognition and multi-gateway payments. RunMags syncs advertiser invoices to your accounting system and does not yet sync subscription invoices.
  • AI for subscription operations. Pelcro describes AI agents for billing set-up, data questions, bulk changes and subscriber calls. RunMags has no subscriber phone agent.
  • A free plan and published prices up to 5,000 customers. Pelcro lists Free, Advanced and Professional prices. Customer caps and some features vary by plan, so ask Pelcro for details.

Where RunMags is different

  • Advertisers and subscribers on one record. Advertising contracts, the flatplan, subscriptions and invoices sit on the same customer record, so a company that both advertises and subscribes is one customer. See how the RunMags CRM for magazines keeps them on one record.
  • Advertising sales and the flatplan. Contracts with order rows per issue, and a flatplan built from signed bookings. We found neither on the Pelcro pages we read.
  • Print distribution tied to subscriptions and advertisers. The per-issue distribution list comes from active subscriptions, with rules for advertiser copies.
  • Plans sized by brands and companies. Plans are sized by legal entities and brands, not by customer count, with monthly prices shown on the pricing page.
  • Accounting for advertiser invoices in Europe. Fortnox, QuickBooks Online or Xero per legal entity, with EU VAT on invoices.
  • Try it first. A 14-day free trial without a credit card, so your team can enter a real issue before talking to sales.

Pelcro's AI agents and Maggie

As of , Pelcro's comparison page says it has five AI agents: AI Billing builds plain-English plans and prices every renewal; the AI Harness lets you ask, analyze and act in plain English; the AI Data CoPilot answers data questions in plain English; AI Customer Service answers subscriber calls and hands anything it cannot resolve to your team; and the AI Coding Agent builds paywalls and checkouts from a prompt (Pelcro vs Magazine Manager page). Its AI Harness changes nothing until a person approves (Pelcro AI Harness page); its AI Customer Service agent answers calls on a dedicated number, verifies the caller and handles requests such as address changes, cancellations and password resets (Pelcro AI Customer Service page). Its AI Billing page describes a plan such as “Charge $1,500 CAD per month, increasing by 3% on each renewal” that the agent then prices at every renewal (Pelcro AI Billing page). All retrieved .

Pelcro's agents work on subscribers, billing and paywalls. Maggie is built into RunMags and works across the publishing operation: she checks what needs attention, helps editors draft and proof stories, answers product questions and guides new customers through onboarding and support cases. RunMags does not document an AI phone agent for subscribers, AI-built paywalls or AI-priced renewals.

Pricing compared (Pelcro, checked )

Pelcro's pricing page lists these plans in US dollars. Each plan also lists a $100 signup credit, and Advanced and Professional list monthly AI credits. The page says customer caps and starred features vary by plan and asks buyers to contact sales for details. Its FAQ says Pelcro charges no implementation or setup fees unless its team works on customisations, migrations or integrations for you, and no transaction fees on top of your payment processor's. The models differ, so compare totals rather than headline rates. Pelcro Advanced is $450 × 12 = $5,400 a year for up to 2,000 customers. RunMags Pro is €399 × 12 = €4,788 a year excluding VAT for one legal entity and one brand. The two figures use different currencies, different units and different scope, since the Pelcro pages we read do not document advertising sales or a flatplan, so neither number is a saving claim. Ask both vendors for a written first-year total for the same publisher, including any services. Our guide to magazine software pricing shows how.

When Pelcro is the better fit

  • Reader revenue is the core of your business and you need metered, freemium or hard paywalls.
  • You want renewals to run on their own and failed card payments to be retried.
  • Subscribers should update cards, download invoices and change plans themselves.
  • Your website or app needs to react to subscription changes through webhooks and an API.
  • You sell single copies through stores and dealers, or need USPS address tools.
  • You are a newspaper, nonprofit or association, which Pelcro lists among its industries, rather than a magazine publisher selling advertising.
  • Your Pelcro setup already works well. Configured plans, paywall rules and staff experience have value, and a move costs time.

When RunMags is the better fit

  • You sell advertising as well as subscriptions and want them on one customer record, with the flatplan built from bookings.
  • You mail a print issue and want the distribution list to come from active subscriptions, with rules for advertiser copies.
  • You invoice advertisers in Europe and need EU VAT and Fortnox, QuickBooks Online or Xero per legal entity.
  • You run several brands with a small team and prefer plans sized by brands and legal entities to a customer-count tier.
  • You want to try the system with your own issue before a sales conversation.

Pelcro's own comparison with Magazine Manager makes a similar point from its side: it says an ad-sales system may suit a publisher better when “Ad sales drive your revenue” or when production should sit in the same system (Pelcro vs Magazine Manager page).

Can you use Pelcro and RunMags together?

RunMags has no documented Pelcro integration. Running both would mean keeping subscribers in Pelcro and advertisers in RunMags, or the reverse, in separate systems. Ask the RunMags team what that split would mean for your billing, your distribution lists and the one-record view of a company that both advertises and subscribes.

How to decide

Give both vendors the same brief: one print and digital subscription sold with an issue-based term, one renewal followed to its payment and, if a card fails, what happens next, one change a subscriber makes in the self-service account, and the next issue's distribution list. If advertising matters, add one multi-issue advertising contract followed through the flatplan to an invoice. Have your own subscription, sales and finance people do the work rather than watch a demo. Moving subscribers either way? The Pelcro alternative guide has a step-by-step plan, and data migration to RunMags explains onboarding imports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between RunMags and Pelcro?

Pelcro describes itself as built around reader revenue: paywalls, print, digital and bundled subscriptions, billing and fulfilment on one subscriber record. RunMags runs advertising sales, the flatplan, subscriptions, circulation and billing on one customer record, so a company that both advertises and subscribes is one customer. Pelcro documents more on the subscription side, including paywalls, automatic renewals with retries and a self-service account. RunMags documents advertising sales and the flatplan, which the Pelcro pages we read do not (retrieved 2026-10-23).

Is Pelcro or RunMags better for paywalls and automatic renewals?

Pelcro. Its pages describe metered, freemium and hard paywalls and renewals with smart retries on failed charges (get.pelcro.com, retrieved 2026-10-23). Does Pelcro do advertising sales or flatplanning?

The Pelcro product pages we read on 2026-10-23 do not document advertising sales, bookings or a flatplan. That is not proof that it lacks them, so ask Pelcro if you need them. Pelcro's own magazine CRM article says a subscription platform is often supplemented by a sales CRM for advertiser pipeline management, and its comparison with Magazine Manager says an ad-sales system may suit you better when ad sales drive your revenue.

How does Pelcro pricing compare with RunMags?

Pelcro prices by number of customers. On 2026-10-23 its pricing page listed Free for up to 100 customers, Advanced at $450 per month, Professional at $800 per month and custom Enterprise pricing, in US dollars. Maggie is RunMags' built-in assistant for the whole publishing operation: she checks what needs attention, helps editors draft and proof stories, answers product questions and guides onboarding. RunMags has no subscriber phone agent.

Can I use Pelcro and RunMags together?

RunMags has no documented Pelcro integration. Using both would mean keeping subscribers and advertisers in separate systems. Ask the RunMags team what that split would mean for your billing and distribution lists.

Can I move from Pelcro to RunMags?

Yes, with help from the team: subscriber and subscription imports are part of RunMags onboarding. Pelcro's pricing FAQ says data can be migrated out using its documentation or with its Professional Services team, with limits that may apply by plan. Card-token continuity is not documented, so agree how saved payment methods will move before you switch. The Pelcro alternative guide has a step-by-step plan.
