A WoodWing alternative for magazine publishers
If you are looking at WoodWing, you are weighing a content-operations platform built around multichannel editorial work and Adobe InDesign production. That suits some publishers well. The useful question is what your magazine business needs to run: an editorial and page-production system for a large team, or one system where editorial, the flatplan, ad sales, subscriptions and billing share the same customer record. RunMags is an option to evaluate when the answer is the second one.
RunMags connects your magazine business from proposal to paid invoice, with Maggie built in. Plans scale by legal entities and brands. Explore the publishing software comparison hub.
What WoodWing says about its product
As of 2026-10-04, WoodWing Studio is described as a multichannel editorial and production system: create copy and assets once and reuse them across print and digital channels, collaborate with real-time annotations, work from templates inside Adobe Creative Cloud, and connect other systems through APIs, webhooks and an integration platform. It runs on premises or in WoodWing Cloud. Source: official WoodWing Studio page, retrieved 2026-10-04. The Studio packages page lists three packages, Starter, Advanced and Ultimate: Starter includes the InDesign plug-in, basic collaboration and multichannel publishing; Advanced adds InDesign Server, an issue manager, single sign-on and an open API; Ultimate adds an advanced print editor and an integration platform. For AI, WoodWing describes AI Layout Automation, which uses blueprints and reusable article shapes to suggest page layouts, with ad slots defined in the blueprints, and an AI Copyfit Assistant, powered by OpenAI, that proposes shorter versions of text in the print editor. Where RunMags works differently
RunMags puts advertising sales, contracts, the flatplan, subscriptions and advertiser invoicing in one system, on the same customer record, next to your stories. Signed advertising orders appear in the issue's flatplan, so the page plan reflects what has actually been sold, and editorial spaces sit on the same pages. Your designers keep InDesign for the page files, and RunMags has an InDesign UXP plugin; ask the team to show it with your own templates. Plans and prices are published, and you can start a trial yourself. Maggie, your publishing sidekick, is built in: she helps editors draft and proof stories, answers product questions and routes a request to the team.
The WoodWing pages we checked, including its publishing industry page, as of 2026-10-04, do not describe ad orders, subscriptions or advertiser invoicing. Absence from a cited page is not proof that something is missing, so ask WoodWing directly if you need them.
When WoodWing may be the better fit
If you run a large editorial team that produces InDesign pages at scale and needs an enterprise digital asset management system, InDesign Server automation or AI layout and copyfit, WoodWing may be the better fit. RunMags is not a DAM, does not automate InDesign Server, does not fit copy to a frame with AI, does not yet have assignment due dates and contributor fields, and does not host a website. This guide makes no claim about WoodWing's reviews, cost or quality.
Test one issue from booking to page
Pick a real issue with a few booked ads and a handful of stories. Ask each vendor to show the same sequence: the signed ad order, its place on the flatplan, the editorial slots around it, the handoff to InDesign and the advertiser invoice. Then move one ad to a later issue and watch which records change. Let someone from editorial, someone from sales and someone from finance review the result.
Plan a bounded switch
If you use an editorial system today, you can keep it for page production and add RunMags next to it. Decide first which records RunMags should hold: advertiser organisations and contacts, subscribers and the issue plan. Agree field mapping and duplicate handling, and import a small sample before the full list. Story archives, assets and InDesign templates need a separate decision with the RunMags team. Compare current RunMags plans using your legal entities and brands.
Frequently asked questions
Is RunMags an alternative to WoodWing?
It can be, for magazine publishers who want editorial, the flatplan, ad sales, subscriptions and billing in one system. As of 2026-10-04, WoodWing describes WoodWing Studio for multichannel editorial work and InDesign production, with AI layout and copyfit features and a separate DAM. RunMags puts the flatplan built from booked ads next to sales, subscriptions and advertiser invoicing. Large editorial teams that need an enterprise DAM, InDesign Server automation or AI layout and copyfit may be better served by WoodWing.
Does WoodWing publish its prices?
Not on its own website. As of 2026-10-04, woodwing.com/pricing returns a not-found page, and the WoodWing Studio packages (Starter, Advanced and Ultimate) are offered with a request for a quote. RunMags plans scale by legal entities and brands; current prices are on the RunMags pricing page.
Does RunMags lay out InDesign pages or fit copy like WoodWing?
No. RunMags is not a page layout tool and does not fit copy to a frame with AI. Your designers keep InDesign for the page files, and RunMags has an InDesign UXP plugin. If you need AI layout, copyfit or InDesign Server automation, keep WoodWing or another tool for page production.
Can I use RunMags next to WoodWing?
Yes, if that suits your team: RunMags can hold advertisers, subscribers, the flatplan and invoicing while an editorial system handles page production. No connector between the two is documented, so agree with the RunMags team how stories and page information will move before you rely on it.
